Leeds United star given two more chances as news emerges about World Cup squad selection

A Leeds United star has discovered the date of his World Cup fate decision.

Leeds United star Dominic Calvert-Lewin has discovered when he will find out if he is off to the World Cup with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, the striker having two more big chances to impress.

Calvert-Lewin’s fine form for Leeds this season was rewarded with an England recall in March, the striker bagging his first minutes for the Three Lions since 2021 when coming on as a second-half substitute in the friendly against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay side at Wembley.

Calvert-Lewin was then one of a handful of players to leave the squad ahead of the month’s second friendly against Japan as boss Tuchel trimmed down his squad size.

The Leeds striker’s return back to Leeds after his outing against Uruguay was pre-planned, several other players leaving the camp through injury.

England then fell to a very disappointing 1-0 defeat to Japan in what was the team’s final friendly before the World Cup is to be named.

Tuchel now has some big decisions to make - including whether or not to include Calvert-Lewin in his final squad - and England have now revealed that the World Cup squad will be announced on Friday, May 22.

That gives Calvert-Lewin two more opportunities to impress with Leeds, in Monday night’s Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur and the following Sunday’s penultimate game of the season at home to Brighton.

A statement released by England on Friday read: “The England men’s senior squad for the FIFA 2026 World Cup will be named on Friday 22 May.

“Head coach Thomas Tuchel will name a 26-player squad for the competition in Canada, Mexico and USA, which takes place between 11 June and 19 July.

“Tuchel will then speak for the first time about his squad selection on a live show from Wembley Stadium connected by EE.

“In early June, the squad will head to Florida for a pre-World Cup training camp which will also see them play two games against New Zealand (9pm BST, Saturday 6 June) and Costa Rica (9pm BST, Wednesday 10 June) with tickets for those matches now on sale.

“England will then begin their World Cup campaign a week later when they meet Croatia in their group stage opener in Dallas on Wednesday 17 June (9pm BST), before facing Ghana in Boston on Tuesday 23 June (9pm BST) and then finishing the group stage games against Panama in New Jersey on Saturday 27 June (10pm BST).”
